In Harmonie - Yogyakarta

Located in Central Java, Indonesia. Yogyakarta is the smallest province in Indonesia with only approximately 3,000 square kilometers. Yet, it attracts many eyes with its uniqueness.

In Javanese mythology, there are three kingdoms that make up Yogyakarta. People believe two mythical kingdoms reside on Mount Merapi, the active volcano, and at Parangtritis beach. The third is the Yogyakarta Sultanate, the last existing pre-colonial sultanate in Indonesia. Acting also as the governor of Yogyakarta, The Sultan, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono, is believed to be the communicator between the two mythical kingdoms. The Sultanate, symbolized by the palace, is built right in a perfect straight line between Merapi and Parangtritis, and the Javanese believe it is the center of universe.

The people of Yogyakarta live with an open mind and simplicity; many believe it’s in relation with their closeness with nature. After all, they are located between an active volcano and an open sea. This closeness brings the people with many blessings from Mother Nature – a fertile volcanic land to farm and a sea in the south rich with fishes. Gifts are offered as gestures of gratitude, together with prayers and ritual sacrifices.

When the big earthquake occurred and Mount Merapi erupted back in mid-2006, many were devastated. Many had to leave their homes, suffering losses everywhere. After two years, when the wrath had gone and turned into a peaceful silence, the people of Yogyakarta are closer than ever with their faith and nature. They appreciated the biggest blessing nature has given, a peaceful heart and a mind synchronized with Mother Nature. It is Yogyakartans’ way of living. Living in harmony. Living in freedom.
