A People War, Nepal
Group Collection
Nepal has just emerged from a decade-long war. The conflict ruined the country and tore its social fabric apart. In these 10 years, nearly 15,000 people were killed, tens of thousands were widowed, orphaned or bereaved. Millions more were forced to flee from their homes. Through all these odds, the citizens struggled for peace and democracy - and won.
This travelling photography exhibition is an account of Nepal's 10 years of war, focusing on the effects of the conflict on the ordinary Nepalis and promoting non-violence by showing and reminding people about the effects of violence. The pictures speak of the trauma of war, and the devastation to people's lives as a result of the conflict. The pictures also tell stories of survival, struggle, hope and the triumph of the non-violent struggle.
The pictures have been selected from the pictorial book "A People War - Images of Nepal Conflict 1996-2006", authored by journalist Kunda Dixit and published by nepa~laya. The book and exhibit was designed by Navin Joshi. The exhibition has travelled to more than 30 venues in Nepal, and has been viewed by more than 350,000 people, making it Nepal's largest travelling exhibition.
It is presented at Chobi Mela by photo.circle, a photography collective based in Kathmandu, Nepal in association with nepa~laya - the publisher and producers of the exhibtion.
