Eye on Southeast Asia
Zhuang Wubin
SINGAPORE
The
notion of resistance seems to exist only
within the sphere of politics in the dichotomy
of heroes vs. villains. Clearly, this definition
is rather narrow.
My
starting point is different. I was travelling
in the region during my vacations for the
last three years while pursuing a journalism
degree back in Singapore and learning to
use a camera. Needless to say, it was boring
to just “pass through” the countries.
So I started searching for stories to tell
although I didn't think I could sell them.
As I set out without a theme in mind, my
contextual lens was slightly more neutral.
Therefore, I have stories of people in acts
of political defiance. But I also have anecdotes
of people getting on with everyday life
when the odds are not in their favour.
