Nowhere people
Swapan Nayak
INDIA
“We are at the mercy
of the river. Sometimes it spares us the
agony of shifting out, sometimes it doesn’t,
but almost always, it haunts us”.
Says Zoinuddin a grizzled seventy-year old,
an inhabitant of a char (temporary riverine
island) in the river Brahmaputra in Assam.
They are forever on the
move. Always looking for the next piece
of dry land to cling to.
There
is an epic struggle. Bound inexorably to
the forces of nature. The exodus or even
a Greek tragedy will be easy reference.
For the people, life is lived on the run
against the cold reality of the Brahmaputra
waging war on them. He is both the creator
and the destroyer.
