Child
Labour and the Global Village:
Child Labour is a complex
issue with no single, simple solution. About 250 million children
between the ages of 5 and 14 work, part time and full-time,
around the world. Many never attend school, or drop out. Some
child workers live on the streets, some at home. Among them
are bonded labourers, domestic servants, prostitutes, and
soldiers. The largest number work in agriculture. Others work
in industrial factories and garbage dumps; plantations; or
mines or tanneries.
We hope to evoke emotion
and action through our stories. The stories are not intended
to leave viewers without hope, but rather with ideas for solutions.
Eventually these eleven photographers will cover eleven different
child labour stories around the world. The stories have been
selected to show diverse cultures, economies, and types of
child work.
