A Biology
of Steel
A Biology of Steel is
the story of the life, death, and rebirth of an American merchant
vessel as seen through the lives of the many people associated
with her throughout her working life: sailors who worked on
her throughout the decades, especially those who sail on her
last voyage from Louisiana to Chittagong, the longshoremen
who load
her last cargo, 43,000 metric tons of grain, a gift from the
US to the government of Bangladesh, the longshoremen who unload
her, and the breakers who beach and demolish the ship in order
to recycle her many materials as part of this country's struggle
to create a modern existence for itself. The ship emerges
as a touchstone to many people around the world; she forms
a chain of connection that reminds us that we are all connected,
no matter what boundaries of culture, politics and economy
appear to stand in between us.
