New York: Andreas Herzau
New York is not an open
city to Herzau. It is a city of iron bars, walls and fences.
Most of the New Yorker photographers make it simple for us.
They present the city as an open stage, on which the actors
are moving around. Helen Levitt, William Klein, Garry Winogrand:
the classical street photographers of Manhattan is almost
like a sporty genre.
Herzau does not take
part in this sport. The city is foreign. Only its geometry
is familiar. On the 11th September he was not in New York.
So, we only see what it is afterwards: the dust that is lying
upon a pattern, on the window, on the iron bar in front of
the lights with the sign "walk/don't walk". "How
is it" asks the photojournalist modestly, "when
the mass grave is not in Rwanda, Iraq, Sierra Leone, but in
front of the door?"
